Whirlwind White gets back to winning ways
Jimmy White, the 46-year-old former world number two, kept up his promising start to the season with a 5-3 defeat of Andrew Higginson at Pontin’s today, to earn a meeting with former World Champion Ken Doherty tomorrow, with a place on the flight to China later this month at stake.
Two of snooker’s best-known figures will go head-to-head at Prestatyn on Friday in the final qualifying round of the Roewe Shanghai Masters.
Whirlwind White has slipped to No 65 in the official rankings, but started his revival by winning three matches to qualify for the Northern Ireland Trophy last month, and kept his form going against former Welsh Open finalist Higginson.
White took the first two frames on the colours and added the next with a break of 43 to go 3-0 up. Higginson pulled one back, then each player compiled a run of 74 to leave the score at 4-2. Widnes-based Higginson won the next with a 68 before White sealed victory by clearing from green to black in frame eight.
Jimmy White has reached the last 48 of the Northern Ireland Trophy and the semi-finals in the Paul Hunter Classic recently. He defeated China’s Li Hang 5-3 in his opening qualifying contest and then beat 2007 Welsh Open runner-up Andrew Higginson 5-3.
Dublin’s Doherty is also forced to qualify having dropped out of the top 16. Tomorrow’s match starts at 10am. A limited number of tickets are available on the day at Pontin’s, costing £3 for residents and £5 for non-residents.
